Barons of Labor: The San Francisco Building Trades and Union Power in the Progressive Era (Working Class in American History Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (March, 1989)
Author: Michael Kazin
Average review score:

excellent
Kanin's research is solid, and for those interested in San Francisco during the Gilded Age, or labor history, this is a must-read. Focusing in on a clique of unionists that seized contol of the city government, with a particular emphasis on Patrick Henry McCarthy. No, he was not a typical business unionist, but rather a urban progressive who combined a pratical wage-worker consciousness with a social reform mentality. On the other hand, he had no problem fusing a racist ideology into his form of progresivism. If you bothered to read this review, buy this book.

Barrio

Author: George Ancona

Heart-touching book that portrays Mexican Amer. urban life
I love this book. This is real literature that Mexican/Mexican American children can relate to; Not only children with Mexican backgrounds, but immigrant children overall. My favorite part is page 10 where Jose stares at the mural painted by the Salvadoran painter (Salvadoran struggles are rarely depicted in literature). This book moved me so much that I am motivated to visit Mission District, San Francisco to experience that beautiful atmosphere first hand.

Thank you, A Southern Californian (Latina)Elementary School Teacher

Barrio Gangs : Street Life and Identity in Southern California
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (October, 1988)
Author: James Diego Vigil
Average review score:

compassionate and astute insights into "la vida loca"
Barrio Gangs is an excellent exploration of the reasons young people gravitate toward street gangs, as well as an accurate, empathic view of the day-to-day reality these young people face. It has enhanced my understanding of the "at risk" children with whom I work, and I recommend it frequently to others in the field of counseling. It is scholarly, yet reflects the author's clear committment to the need to understand these youngsters. A fine source for all those interested in the culture of streetgangs. (I believe that many of the insights the author shares with regard to Latino streetgangs are also applicable to streetgangs of different ethnicities.)

Barris Kustoms of the 1950s
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (October, 1994)
Authors: George Barris and David Fetherston
Average review score:

An excellent tribute to Custom Car Builders
I have followed the work of George and(the late) Sam Barris since 1953. Their work set a trend for all custom car builders and owners. George has done a great tribute to many car builders by showing these terrific photos of many cars that we all thought were lost. As one reads thru the book, you begin to realize that these rolling sculptures are true works of art, and several of these vehicles have been featured in museums and art shows. One can thank George for having the ability to photograph these (K)custom cars during the 1950s.

Battling the Inland Sea: American Political Culture, Public Policy, and the Sacramento Valley, 1850-1986
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (August, 1989)
Author: Robert Lloyd Kelley
Average review score:

A Fascinating History of the Sacramento Valley
If you've ever taken a guided factory tour, you know the difference between someone reciting memorized facts and someone who can call upon a deep reservoir of knowledge, accumulated over a lifetime, for information that will illuminate a particular subject. Mr. Kelley clearly belongs in the latter class. Reading his book, it is apparent that we are only scratching the surface of what this remarkable historian knows about the complex interplay of history, politics, personality and nature that conspired to produce the water system northern California has today.

The story of California water is fascinating, although perhaps only of real interest to Californians. Nevertheless, even if only for that audience, Mr. Kelley has written an entirely readable, yet simultaneously scholarly volume. Anyone interested in an introduction to the state of northern California's water situation should begin with this book.

In a general sense, however, this book is also about changing political and sociological trends in America beginning around 1850. The focus is on flooding in the Sacramento Valley, and its battles between gold miners and valley farmers, or between Republican engineers and Democratic populists, but parallels are probably found elsewhere in our country during the same period of history. I enjoyed this book tremendously.

You really should buy this book
I had the opportunity to see this show in Philadelphia and it absolutely blew me away. Not only does it include Richard Diebenkorn's best work, but it also includes work by Paul Wonner, Elmer Bischoff, Manuel Neri, Nathan Oliveira and David Park (among others). I have drawn endless inspiration from this book and you most likely will too.
